It can be a bit of a mess keeping track of foes, especially when you’re fighting multiple strong opponents at the same time and want to focus on one of them so you can whittle that foe’s health down faster as opposed to constantly searching and re-acquiring that one target.ĭifficulty also can be all over the place. At the very least, it would be nice to have a target camera like Monster Hunter that allows you swivel the camera toward your main target with a button tap as it’s easy to lose track of fast-moving enemies in the heat of battle. Power apparently comes at the cost of your humanity and it’s something that certain players might find disturbing. Doing so also changes the appearance of your character, turning your pilot from being human to something more mechanical. It’s something you certainly want to think long and hard about as the path you choose determines whether your pilot and robot end up being excellent at close range, long range or something in between. That’s right, you can further develop your pilot as well by investing skill trees to power up your protagonist. It’s quite easy to see the hours fade away as you fall into the endless circle of farming and customizing not just your mech but your character as well. On top of that, there’s a plethora of customization options, not just for cosmetics but also for attachments that power up your weapons, adding another layer of strategy to your loadouts. The game also throws in loot drops for gear in its various missions, encouraging players to play and replay stages to get the weapon or armor piece they want. I found myself tinkering and experimenting with various loadouts from one mission to the next, which made things feel fresh even after hours of play. It certainly helps that each weapon class feels different and distinct. You can employ all sorts of combinations depending on your mood or the mission at hand. Heck, maybe you want to strap on double bazooka arms. Or you might prefer holding a sword to get up close with foes while also shooting at farther enemies with a bazooka. Maybe you want to dual wield machine guns. Perhaps you want to equip a shield on one hand and a rifle in the other. Your mech’s movement just feels right overall, allowing you to pull off some pretty neat maneuvers by land or air.Īdd a nice selection of weapons that you can separately wield on both hands and the gameplay mechanics shine even more. Once it clicks, however, the mech combat is easily the biggest strength of Daemon X Machina. Well, that or you’re rusty after a long sabbatical from mech-style games. There’s a lot to keep track of at first and it can be a bit overwhelming if you’ve never played a game like this before. It looks even better in motion, whether it be flying at top speed or gracefully skating on the ground like Apollo Anton Ohno. Boasting cool designs and a plethora of tools for robotic destruction, it’s hard to stop from admiring the mech model shown onscreen via your in-game menu and just twirl it around. It starts with a surprisingly robust character editor that gives you plenty of choices when designing your in-game avatar, whether it be male or female. And even among those who do, there are expectations - some of which can be pretty high.įor its part, Daemon X Machina makes a good first impression. Not everyone relates to the inherent romance surrounding cold machines in human form after all. That’s something even a mech fan such as myself understands. Just like the genre it represents, however, Daemon X Machina won’t be for everybody. Add the pedigree from Armored Core producer Kenichiro Tsukuda and it was hard not to be excited for it if you’re a fan of Japanese mechs such as myself. Not only was it a mech game, Daemon X Machina also legitimately looked great in its initial previews. As such, Daemon X Machina proved to be a legitimate surprise.
